This week, free shuttle buses began to transport passengers between San Diego International Airport and the old city transit center to ease the long-standing demand for public transportation to and from the airport.
Six buses run 7 days a week from 4:45 am to 12:30 am, stopping at Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and the transit center. These buses run every 20 to 30 minutes and are synchronized with the trams, Metropolitan Transit System buses, and Coaster and Amtrak trains that regularly drop off passengers in the old city transportation center. Electric shuttles should not be difficult to find, because they have an airplane image, airport logo and orange "Flyer" on the side.
Kimberly Becker, CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, said: “San Diego Flyer will provide a seamless connection between the airport and the old city transit center.” “This is the many ways that the airport authority is working to improve passengers’ access to the SAN (airport). One, we hope that passengers from the airport can take advantage of this free service."
But things started to slow down on Sunday. According to Sabrina LoPiccolo, a spokesperson for the Airport Authority, only 29 passengers took the shuttle bus. She added that the agency expects usage to pick up during Thanksgiving in a few days.
The shuttle plan is a short-term and partial solution to a long-standing deep-seated problem: San Diego, the eighth largest city in the United States, does not have a public transportation system connected to its main airport.
In 2019, the airport handled more than 25 million passengers. Although travel volume has declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been gradually rebounding, and with the gradual recovery of business and international travel, it is expected to eventually return to pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, the Airport Authority started construction of the $3 billion expansion and overhaul of Terminal 1 this month.

The California Coastal Commission agrees to the project, but wants to ensure free shuttles to the airport transfer station, the old city, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
After the Airport Authority promised to open a free shuttle route, the California Coastal Commission approved the project in September.
In the long term, the Airport Authority, the San Diego Government Association, and the San Diego Metropolitan Transportation System are working to establish high-speed transportation connections with Terminals 1 and 2. The Coastal Commission requires the airport to designate its on-site transfer station, which is usually located on the west side of the parking lot of Terminal 1. The airport authority is obliged to leave room for a station that can easily serve both terminals.
San Diego's "Grand Central Station" moves forward
SANDAG has begun an environmental review of the Central Transportation Hub, which marks a crucial step in the agency’s development of a transit center connected to the airport on the Naval Old Town campus.
