Robot software company RoboDK has released a new palletizing plug-in for intuitive programming of palletizing applications, which is compatible with almost all robot brands. It speeds up this usually tedious programming task and improves deployment efficiency.

Palletizing is an increasingly common application of robotic automation. For human workers, lifting the container onto the pallet is tedious and increases the risk of musculoskeletal injury due to its repetitive nature.

Robots have long been an alternative to manual palletizing. However, programming tasks has always been tedious.

RoboDK marketing director Flore Cachera said: "Many customers have requested this feature. All the heavy work of palletizing programming is now done by RoboDK. Users only need to set the position of the pallet."

The new RoboDK plug-in can be used immediately with hundreds of robot models supported by the software.

Why programming robot palletizing is a boring job

Robots are often used to free workers from boring and repetitive tasks. However, the traditional options of robotic programming make deploying palletizing applications almost as tedious as the palletizing itself.

For example, a pallet with 800 boxes requires a robot program with at least 1600 points. Creating this procedure will be repetitive and time-consuming. The user needs to manually teach the robot the location of each box, or hard-code a script to do this for them.

RoboDK CEO Albert Nubiola explained that the robotics market has traditionally been unbalanced in terms of palletizing applications. He said: "Some robot controllers provide a built-in user interface to quickly set up palletizing and depalletizing projects. Unfortunately, this is not applicable to all robots or controllers.

"RoboDK's palletizing plug-in allows you to use any robot for palletizing."

In addition to speeding up the programming steps, another benefit of the new plug-in is that users can program tasks offline. This eliminates production downtime caused by workshop robot programming.

How the new palletizing plug-in works

RoboDK users can now use the palletizing plug-in. It can be accessed by downloading the latest update.

Jeremy Brouillard, RoboDK’s product manager, explained how it works: “Our goal is to create one of the most user-friendly features to date. To achieve it, we rely on a basic but efficient 2D graphics. You first pass on the screen Drag the boxes up to create the pallet pattern. Then stack your unique box patterns to form your pallet layer. All that's left to do is to simulate and generate the program."

To use the plugin, users only need to open a menu and enter their tray settings step by step. Then, they can easily drag and drop each box to where it should be on each layer of the pallet. The 3D visualization displays the simulation in real time, and the user can go back and adjust the settings, so the settings fully meet all their requirements.

Brouillard added: “Anyone who uses robots to simulate or program palletizing applications should take a look at this feature. This is a real time saver.”

Palletizing is just one of several high-impact applications that RoboDK is working hard to support, although they don't want to disclose too much.

Cachera explained that these new features are driven by user feedback. She said: "We are not developing robot simulation software for ourselves, but for our users. We will continue to listen to their opinions and provide new features that really suit their needs. Most importantly, we will maintain'RoboDK touch ': Stay flexible, easy to use, and support the largest range of robotic arms."
