The stunning photos show a NASA space shuttle flying with an Orbiter Endeavor rocket strapped to its roof.

The journalist Tyler Rogoway shared a beautiful photo on Twitter, which shot an airplane carrying a rocket from directly above as it flew through the desert.

Rogoway shared that he first discovered this photo a few years ago when he visited what is now called the Armstrong Flight Research Center.

"I was told that this picture was taken when the Endeavour returned to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in December 2008. It is one of the most loved pictures... Kara Thomas," Rogoway wrote .

"If I remember correctly, this photo was planned in advance and executed perfectly in the back seat of the Armstrong F/A-18B.

"The aircraft has been reversed-or nearly reversed-to capture the unique angle of the loaded SCA."

When sharing the photo on Twitter, Rogoway added: “The people at the Armstrong Flight Research Center were very proud of this photo the last time I was there.”

This image received thousands of likes and shares on Twitter, and commenters were surprised that the plane could carry the Endeavour on its back.

In other space news, parts of the United States may see the northern lights this weekend due to strong solar flares.

The flare is expected to hit the earth this weekend — in time for Halloween — when the stunning northern lights will be visible across the United States.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned that it may also see areas affected by potentially strong geomagnetic storms.

Storms of this level can show the northern lights visible at latitudes as low as Pennsylvania.

Space weather physicist Dr. Tamisa Skoff said on Twitter: "Halloween's direct hit! The solar storm launched during the X-flare today is indeed directed towards the earth!

"NASA's forecast confirmed the impact early on October 31.

"Aurora is expected to appear in mid-latitudes, as well as GPS reception problems and amateur radio interference on the night side of the earth!"

Flares are the result of coronal mass ejection (CME)-massive ejection of plasma from the outer layer of the sun (called the corona).

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory tracked the star’s activity and captured an image of the flare at 11:35 AM Eastern Standard Time on Thursday.

In a blog post, NASA stated that "major" flares have been classified as X1.
