It came down to his last attempt. Gururaja Poojary stepped onto the podium knowing that a failed attempt to lift would cost him a place on the podium at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Gururaja, who had won a silver medal four years ago, had moved up a weight class this time. He was locked in an engrossing battle with Canada’s Youri Simard, who pushed the Indian lifter to the limit. He had to lift 151 kg in his final attempt to win the bronze medal.

Gururaja approached the barbell with a poker face and let out a loud screech, as if to let the pressure out, before lifting the bar and smoothly bringing it up to his shoulders. He then effortlessly lifted it over his head while roaring in glee, much to the pleasure of the Indian fans in the stands.

With a total weight of 269 kg, Gururaja was able to win the bronze medal in the 61 kg division. It wasn’t simple. But then again, nothing has ever come naturally to the pick-up truck driver’s son.

It was India’s second medal after Sanket Sagar won a silver in the men’s 55kg weightlifting.
