Sai World is a global fruit trading company that grows packs and markets fruit, head quartered in Queensland, Australia. The company has gained a wide reputation for choosing the best produce, preparing and packing them to comply with international specifications.
One of Sai World’s main growers is Devlins Pound, located in Riverland South Australia. The farm has around 20,000 citrus trees planted across 220 acres. The fruit is grown, sorted and packed on site.
“The growing season for the 2022 crops has been very challenging. With many irregular weather patterns coupled with very high fertiliser prices have resulted in below average sizing and above-average skin blemishes. This will present many challenges throughout the season, in particular sourcing clean fruit larger than 72 count,” explains Sam Visala from Sai World.
May 2022 Season Update Weather 2022 has been one of the most challenging growing seasons many growers have experienced. Hail storms early in the season (October – December 2021) have resulted in heavy blemish across the entire growing region, with some orchards being hit harder than others. Lack of rain during the growing season has also negatively impacted fruit size with much of the region recording average sizing around the 88-100 count. The lack of warm days during summer also negatively impacted fruit sizing. The colour break on all varieties is slightly delayed due to abnormal weather.
Fertiliser/Chemical pricing Due to the ongoing effects of Covid-19 on supply chains, fertiliser pricing has tripled in many cases. Fertiliser pricing hit record highs this year causing many growers to take a more conservative approach to fertilise their crops. Many of the key products used to size fruit have doubled in price in 4 months. Potassium Nitrate, an essential product for fruit sizing, has increased in price by 100% in 3 months, the original pricing was $1,400/tonne new price is $3100/tonne. Furthermore, products essential for weed control have also increased by 300% from $3,500/shuttle to $15,000/shuttle. The rate of cost increases is not sustainable for many growers and poses many challenges if it continues to the 2023 growing season.
Packaging Washington Navel, Cara Cara, Late Lane Navels and Eureka Lemon are packed in 18 kg net Telescopic cartons, 15 kg net Euro tray and 2 kg net bags or 3 kg net bags in 18 kg net open top cartons. Lemons are packed in Lemon Packages: - 18 kg net Telescopic and 15 kg net Euro tray cartons.
“For the 2022 season we will see more fruit being shipped in pre-pack bags due to the smaller sizing and increase in blemishes. Further this year we will be offering a heavy pack (20kg+) for all markets on request to assist importers with a competitive edge over other brands.”
Sai World has long-term relationships with many growers in various regions of Australia to supply the broadest range through the season. The company also offers customised packing solutions including retail packaging, they will also provide a service from growers to freight forwarder. As well as supplying the Australian domestic market they export to Asia and North America.
