An MBTA Orange Line shuttle bus driver was assaulted by several juveniles at the Jackson Square station in Boston, a spokesperson for transit police said.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday according to authorities.

According to the spokesperson, the bus driver was transported to a Boston area hospital for treatment as a result of the assault.

Transit Police said their detectives "were actively investigating the incident."

No additional information was immediately released.

The MBTA has been running free shuttle buses between Oak Grove and Haymarket/Government Center and between Forest Hills and Back Bay/Copley as a result of the Orange Line shutdown, which will continue through Sept. 19.

MBTA overseers approved a contract with A Yankee Line, Inc. to spend up to $37 million on as many as 200 shuttle buses during the diversions.

"We've been told by some of the supporting teams that we literally have every accessible bus east of the Mississippi in service here running these alternative shuttles," MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said last month.
